BMW recently introduced the iX5 Hydrogen in South Africa’s first on-road demonstration of hydrogen-powered vehicles. To support this landmark event, Elemental Energy partnered with Air Products South Africa and Sasol to establish and operate a remote hydrogen refuelling station.
The refuelling setup combined a large tube trailer, a high-pressure booster system, and Elemental Energy’s mobile storage unit, creating a complete hydrogen supply solution. The entire refuelling site was powered off-grid using our H₂IPO system, which generated clean electrical power from hydrogen.

Project Highlights

• Refuelling infrastructure was deployed to support BMW’s Hydrogen iX5 demonstration vehicles.
• A remote refuelling station was established in collaboration with Air Products South Africa and Sasol.
• All compression and refuelling operations were powered solely by Elemental Energy’s H₂IPO running on hydrogen.
• The vehicles were driven by energy-sector leaders and public-sector representatives, showcasing the potential of hydrogen mobility in the near future.
